BERLIN, CT — When thinking of landscape design, a piano doesn’t usually come to mind. But that’s exactly what local landscapers included in their award-winning design at the 35th annual Connecticut Flower and Garden Show last week.
The design idea, conceived to fit in with the theme “In the Spotlight,” earned Hillside Landscaping Co. the Best Design Award at the show Feb. 19.
“We incorporated a piano and made it into a water feature,” said John Wilcox, co-owner of Hillside Landscaping Co., at 162 Burnham Street in Berlin, Connecticut.
The water served as the “stage” the piano sat on, he explained, while a separate, smaller water feature using a large carved rock sat to one side. “It was all balanced by trees that we had put lights in to portray stage lights,” Wilcox added.
Hillside Landscaping, which has been in business since 1984, is no stranger to design awards. Wilcox and co-owner Steven Walowski have garnered dozens of awards over the years from the Connecticut Flower and Garden Show, held at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. So many, in fact, that they’re running out of wall space for their award plaques.
“We have a fairly full wall of stuff,” Wilcox says. “We’ve done very well there.”
The company specializes in landscape and hardscape design and installation, water features, specialty gardens and more.
